Every writing project (40+ samples below) begins with one thing: researching your target audience. Nothing else matters when you’re trying to connect with your prospective customers, clients or followers.
Many years ago when I first started working for a national advertising agency, I was given some industrial-strength advice from a Madison Avenue world-class writer: think less about you and your products and think more about the reader. It’s how Fortune 500 companies have been marketing to their audiences for 70+ years.
Every writing project I work on begins with one question: who is your target audience? If you don’t know or need help researching their VALS (values and lifestyles) needs, I will be happy to handle the research. It’s not rocket science. However, it does help pinpoint who your buyers and prospects are and how they perceive marketing content.
Honestly, since the evolution of online digital marketing, VALS no longer supports segmenting your audiences into traditional buyer types (i.e. innovators, thinkers, believers etc).
Instead, I take the approach connecting with your audience on both the emotional and technological interest plateau. Then craft persuasive reasons (i.e. testimonials, product/service benefits) to move your prospects further down the buying process.
